TIPS FOR GUITARISTS
Tips For Guitarists. When I started playing the guitar I wish I had known these tips. Sometimes learning to play by yourself you find that you struggle through basic stuff that any intermediate guitarist could have helped you on.
Do you find that you have struggled to get into playing the guitar?
Do you find that other beginners have learnt quicker than you?
Do you find you struggle to keep up with other guitarists?
If your answer is yes to any of the above then these guitaring tips will help you out.
1. DO YOUR STRINGS GOES OUT OF TUNE WHEN BENDING THEM?
You busy rocking it and you bend those strings to get that bent string sound only finding that your strings always go out of tune. If this happens each and every time then it could be that you have a cheap guitar. Lots of cheaper guitars go out of tune very quickly. So after you have tried the below and it does not work consider buying a newer and better guitar.
As a beginner guitarist I am sure that you have found this to be a bit annoying and probably more of a mystery. This happened to me and after speaking to other guitarist I was told how to sort it out.
THIS IS WHAT I WAS TOLD
First thing you must do is stretch your strings out a bit by pulling on each string. Pulling on the string will stretch it a little. Secondly, re-tune your strings but only tension up. This meaning that all chords must be a little higher than what the chord should be. This helps because on some guitars when the string bends it pulls the strings and can sometimes un-tune the tuning machines. Keep tuning the strings until you can bend them without taking your guitar out of tune. – Tips For Guitarists
2. DOES IT HURT WHEN YOU BEND THE CHORDS?
Does it hurt your fingers when you bend those strings while playing a gig or practicing? Are you bending those chords with one finger? If yes, you are doing it wrong. One finger will definitely take strain. The fix would be to use to use all your available fingers to bend the chords. This takes a lot of pressure off of the one and spreads them out to all the other fingers. – Tips For Guitarists
3. DO SOME FRETS HAVE A NASTY, BUZZING SOUND?
When you play some strings you find that the chords just sounds really bad. This can make your whole song that you playing just sound terrible. And the worst thing is you might think there is something wrong with the guitar. You might think that you have a faulty wood or very faulty fret levels. But before you take it in to be repaired you can rather just take a star screw driver and lower the pick ups. Adjust them until you find that the chords are playing a lot better and that they sound better. Lower the pick ups just enough, do not lower it too much. – Tips For Guitarists
4. ARE YOU HAVING PROBLEMS WITH SPEED RUNS OR LONG PLAYS?
Do you find that playing the guitar for longer period runs hurt your hand. This is a simple fix, just a small adjustment with the motion of play can sort this out. Play hard on the important accents such as a metronome beat or by following the drum beats. Then play softly on the other notes. Also remember to minimise the movement of your hand and push your pick firmly with your thumb. Do this instead of making a wide wrist rotation. – Tips For Guitarists
5. MAKE SURE YOU HAVE CORRECT POSTURE
Having the correct posture while playing the guitar is a very important thing. The way you sit and play the guitar will play a big role in the way you look and the way you play. Bad posture includes having slanted shoulders, not sitting straight and sitting slanted towards the fret board. Having a good posture will also help you play and practice longer. Having a bad posture will also affect the health of you back especially back pain etc. These are the main guitaring postures that will help you. – Tips For Guitarists
THE CLASSICAL POSITION
The is one of the most popular postures while playing the guitar. Here you need to have a foot stool so you can rest your left leg on. In this position it is key to have the curved part of the guitar on your left leg. Also make sure the bottom of the guitar is resting on your right leg. Make sure the guitar hole is in the centre of your body and that your shoulders are straight. Before you are ready to play make sure you pull the guitar towards you and sit with a upright but relaxed back. You can also tilt the guitar towards you but slightly upwards so that you can have a great view of the fret board. Make sure that the side of your arm is bent so that it put your hand directly in place to play and strum. – Tips For Guitarists
DO NOT BEND YOUR WRIST
You do not want your wrist to bend in any way while strumming rather try having a straight arm all the way to the strumming position. With the other arm you must have a comfortable bend on your elbow joint and curve your fingers around to place on the chords. Do not push your hand too close to the fret board but rather have a gap or a “pocket of air” as they say. You must try stay in a straighter position so that your spine does not bend. If you play this while your back is bent you can risk back injury. This playing or practising position is great and you have the neck of the guitar close to you. This is the best way to play longer gigs as you do not take strain playing like this. – Tips For Guitarists
THE ELEVATED RIGHT LEG POSITION
This is another great way to sit and play. This is the second most popular playing positions and I personally play a lot like this. Here you will have your right leg place on a foot stool or on the leg of your chair underneath. The foot must be elevated about 4 or 5 inches to get the most comfortable position out of it. This allows your knee to be slightly elevated. This also then allows the guitar to sit comfortably on your lap. You will notice that the hole of the guitar is lightly to your side. The right strumming arm is in a comfortable position and it allows you to play with ease. – Tips For Guitarists
THIS POSITION MAY HURT YOU BACK
This seated position might put some strain on your back as your spine does bend a little. The slump of the shoulders can also contribute towards the strain you might get. I myself like playing like this and find that it is fine but if you have any back issues you can find that it can put strain on the spine. Perhaps the fact that the guitar is slightly to the right while playing is the main cause of this. – Tips For Guitarists
THE LEG OVER SITTING POSITION
I personally do not play in this position. This sort of position will be great if you sitting in your cabin or sitting around a camp fire. The position is basically just bending your right leg over your left one and sitting back. By crossing the leg over you do elevate the guitar a bit making it more easier to play. The guitar is slightly to the one side and that can make this a more challenging way to play. Sitting like this can also put some strain on your back. Another drawback is that you left elbow is also closer to your body making it awkward to play sometimes. – Tips For Guitarists
YOU FOOT CAN FALL ASLEEP LIKE THIS
Playing like this can cause your right foot to fall asleep as it can put some strain on your leg arteries. So it is not too practical for playing a longer gig or playing session.
6. USE A METRONOME WHILE PRACTISING
A metronome is a great way to learn to play with rhythm and playing to a beat. In the beginning this can be a difficult task and you might find it difficult to do. Keep trying and you will get it right. Try going slower in the beginner and then speed it up as you learn to play with rhythm. – Tips For Guitarists

DO NOT GIVE UP
This must be my most important tip. Do not give up, I have put this term in many articles on Goguitarin.com. The reason is because it is the only thing that pushing me ahead. When people tell you that you cannot play and sound bad – keep playing and learning. When you play and your fingers hurt or even bleed – keep on playing. When you play in front of the church or on a gig and you play badly – keep on playing an learning. You cannot give up as playing is the only way you will become good. If you listen to all the negative people you will have to give up, push them out of your mind and keep on playing and DO NOT GIVE UP -EVER. If you do not give up you will one day become a GREAT guitarist. – Tips For Guitarists
